The World's youngest grandmaster Wesley So, aged 14, had a very good result (performance rating 2708) in Dubai (prize fund AUS $48,000) winning the Cup on countback in a field of 131 players from 25 countries including 29 grandmasters.

Illya Nyzhnyk (aged 11 years, 7 months) has scored his first grandmaster norm by winning the Nabakov Memorial International GM tournament in Kiev, Ukraine. Fourteen grandmasters with an average rating of 2717 will compete in the round robin event 21 April-5 May. The top seeds are World No.5 seventeen-year-old Magnus Carlsen (NOR 2765), S. Mamedyarov (AZE 2752), T. Radjabov (AZE 2751), P. Svidler (RUS 2746), S. Karjakin (UKR 2732). The winner of the series at the end of 2009 will play the winner of the World Cup for the right to challenge the World Champion in September 2010.The European Individual Championships (prize fund AUS $237,000) also start tonight in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. 332 players including 187 grandmasters, 188 rated above 2500,69 above 2600 compete for World Title qualifying places. 165 are in the Womens event including 145 titled players.Leading final scores in the Dubbo RSL Grand Prix weekender (30 players, six rounds) Tony Weller (QLD 1759) 6, David Castor (NSW 2038) and Allen Setiabudi (ACT 1591) 5. The next rapid grand Prix event will be held at Bonnyrigg Sports Club on Saturday 26th April over seven rounds.Two nine-year-olds finished in the top three places in the NSW Junior League's Autumn One-Day Tournament, which attracted 252 players ranging in age from six to 17. Many other young players did well; 11 of the top 12 scorers were aged under 15. Sharing first place with 7.5 points out of eight were Andrew Pan (aged 9) and relative veteran Adrian Miranda (aged 14). Half a point behind them was Harry Ruan (aged 9). Nine players, including eight-year-old Sean Gu, shared fourth place on 6.5 points. The League's Autumn Two-Day Tournament will take place on April 23-24.
