Now, It's Virtually Life After Death

THE late Heath Ledger is going to complete the film he was working on at the time of his death, thanks to the magic of technology. The news that he will be digitally morphed into the missing scenes came just a week after Prince Charles, or at least a flurry of electrons claiming to be Prince Charles, addressed a conference on energy futures in Dubai in a speech recorded as a hologram. It might be all right for famous actors and princes of the blood, but is this the future for the rest of us? We hope not.
His Royal Hologram may not mind this fancy new way to work from home but most people would resent the intrusion on their leisure time. As for Heath Ledger, it won't do, frankly. Has Julia Gillard been informed about his situation? She should be. At the Herald we believe in this simple principle: no one, however much their skills may be in demand in a tight labour market, should have to work while they are dead.
